The Coffee Craze vs. The Wellness Hype

There are two major trends happening on the planet right now.
-
Coffee + Wellness.
-
But what does coffee + wellness really equal? Can you add those two together?
-

Here's the low based on some research:

Facts:

  • It's delicious, carries some antioxidants & can be an excellent social instigator (coffee culture is a rad culture).

Brutal Facts:

  • According to the Mayo Clinic, consuming caffeine "may lead to insomnia, nervousness, restlessness, irritability, an upset stomach, a fast heartbeat and even muscle tremors."
  • According to Dr. Chappus, "coffee stimulates the adrenal glands, which means that every time you drink coffee, you’re activating the body’s fight-or-flight response. But, instead of releasing adrenaline so the body can react to a true stressor, the adrenals are releasing this hormone in response to your coffee consumption." This overuse of the adrenals can lead to adrenal fatigue. If you're exhausted and feel depleted on the day to day, this could already be you (definitely do your research).

But, hey, I just got back from Miami and had my little cafecito in Little Havana and sipped it too. It was one of the best days. If it feeds your soul to have a cup of joe every once in a while – DO IT. Same goes for a lot of other anti-wellness activities out there: if it feeds your soulthen have that cupcake at that one of a kind bakery one afternoon. It's all good.

But did all that really need to be explained? Ask yourself how you feel post-coffee (not during the high, because that part is a fantastic scam). Ask about 4-6 hours post cup/shot/mug/whatever. You know, the crash. Your body knows. Any aversion it's having is an important message. Listen to your body. Always.

  • Great message. Your body will always give you the answers….it is what we do with the information that can change your life.
I used to abuse coffee….life is about balance. I am still learning everyday. Keep up the good work,!
